So what is P.A.T and what's it all about?
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is the recommended way to check your electrical items are safe.  The Health & Safety at work regulations recommend all businesses have their electrical appliances maintained regularly by a competent person. Insurance companies may ask to see proof of PAT testing of equipment if a claim is made.

So why should I have  it done?
As well as peace of mind, approximately 30 fatalities occurred caused by burns and electric shocks.

What is the legal requirement?
Electricity at work regulations states in regulation 4 (2)

"As may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained as to prevent, so far as reasonably practicable, such danger".

What should be tested?
All electrical equipment and systems should be regularly examined and tested according to IEE Code of Practise recommendations.

Who is responsible?

  • Users of electrical equipment.
  • Administrators with responsibility for electrical maintenance.
  • Any business owners who have staff or the public visiting their site.
  • Other duty holders such as Directors etc....

How often do I need to have appliances tested?
It can depend on the appliance type and the environment it is used in. We recommend annually for most equipment.
